Measuring the Lake: Field Research on Campus

Swan Lake is not just a landscape on campus. It is a laboratory. Students sample water, record clarity and temperature, and compare their readings across seasons.

On the organic farm, the questions are different. Students follow the cycle of sowing, maintenance and harvest, and test how composting changes the soil. At the zoo and stables, they observe animal behaviour and design enrichment programmes.

The work is slow and sometimes messy. Data does not always behave, weather changes the plan, and a result may raise more questions than it answers. That is the point: students learn to design a method, keep a record and explain their uncertainty.

Each project ends with a paper, a poster or a presentation. The audience may be teachers, younger students or visiting families — but the standard is the same: make the evidence clear, and make the argument honest.
